Effortlessly learn how to market smarter with 1 ridiculous story + 1 brief takeaway

Story Soirée

The website hater turned website copywriter who wants your site to work as hard as you so you can book more dream clients, get more Stripe notifications, and stop secretly working from your phone at 9 p.m. when you’re supposed to be watching Netflix.

I’m Jordyn

hi!

SEO

Read time: 4 mins, 53 secs

“Awesome! Do you have a website I can check out?” a new, seemingly dreamy client asks in your Instagram DMs.

Immediately, your stomach sinks.

She got your name from a previous client. So you hoped you could skip the trauma of website sharing and jump straight into a discovery call and proposal.

Now you have to pray your reputation is enough to save you.

Because once she hits your site, it feels like a gamble of whether you’ll hear from her again.

You type out the URL.

Backspace.

Take a deep breath, type it back out, slap a disclaimer next to the URL that you’re currently updating your site, and hit send.

A GIF from Woody from Toy Story saying, "So long, partner."

“Maybe she’ll ignore it and decide to work with me anyway,” you think as you stare at the wall above your desk in despair.

This finger-crossing strategy isn’t necessary.

And that 3:37 p.m. panic? It’s usually what causes service providers to frantically type “hire a website copywriter” into Google.

After all, your website copy is your most important piece of real estate in the online world—whether you rely on referral roulette, use blogging, or run on the social media hamster wheel.

Because all decisions roads lead back to your website. It’s what ultimately helps a best-fit client decide to fill out your inquiry form… or not.

But not every service provider is actually ready to invest in website copywriting.

In this post, you’re gonna learn the 5 telltale signs you’re ready to hire a copywriter for your website—or not.

Let’s get into it.

Sign No. 1: You have an offer that clients have paid actual money for

Not an idea your cousin Annie told you sounded really cool. Not an offer that some rando on IG said they were so in for—then ghosted you. Not an idea that’s been sitting in your Notes app since March.

You have an offer that living, breathing humans handed over their credit card info for.

Websites with great copy sell what’s proven—not what sounds like a good offer in theory.

So if you’re still spitballing pricing, packaging, or what your best-fit clients actually want, no amount of clever words will save you. They’ll only make guesswork sound confident. And confident guesswork doesn’t sell. It just wastes your hard-earned money.

But if you’ve got an offer that’s put money in the bank? Well, it’s time to read Sign No. 2. 😉

Sign No. 2: You have clarity on what you do, how you do it better than anyone else, and why that matters

If you wanna grab a lead’s attention (and keep them on your site), you have to clearly explain why your approach is unique within the first 10 SECONDS of them landing on your website.

Otherwise? They gone.

(Sorry. I don’t make the rules.)

So if you hopped in an elevator and someone engaged in the horrific event known as small talk asked you, “What do you do? How do you do it better than anyone else? And why should I care?” Could you answer it within the 30 seconds it takes to arrive at your floor?

If the answer is a word salad that begins with “Well, it’s kinda hard to explain” and ends with “does that make sense?” That’s a problem.

Dialed-in messaging and copy stem from knowing this vital info.

Otherwise, it’s like trying to fill your home with Anthropologie milk glass table lamps and blue velvet couches when the drywall isn’t up and the concrete isn’t dry.

So if the basics aren’t nailed down yet, that’s your homework first. But if you can already answer that elevator question without breaking a sweat? That’s your green light.

Pass go. Collect $200. And move onto Sign No. 3.

Sign No. 3: You know what you want to say IN YOUR HEAD, but watch the words come out as a jumbled mess

This is the opposite of Sign No. 2 lol. But it’s one of the most—if not THE most—common signs it’s time to hire a website copywriter.

You can explain what you do, how you do it differently, and why it matters in your SLEEP. But the second you sit down to write it? The sentences turn to second-guessing sludge.

Before you know it, it’s 11:30 p.m and you’ve rage-deleted 7 versions of your About page because none of them sound like you.

That gap—the one between what’s in your head and what’s on the page—is the exact gap a freelance web copywriter is trained to close. (Well, a good one, at least.)

So if you have more stress headaches than you can count from DIY’ing your website copy, then continue on to Sign No. 4.

Sign No. 4: 99.7% of clients come from referral roulette

Pop quiz time! When’s the last time a referral came in from ChatGPT? Google? A podcast? A random scroll on Instagram or Threads?

If you’re racking your brain, that’s a tell.

Referrals convert better because the trust is already cemented by the time they land in your inbox. The scientific reason for this is the Messenger Effect.

But relationships are doing the selling, not your website. Strangers don’t hand over that same trust for free. Your site has to earn their business—every last ounce of it—in real time with ZERO relationship to lean on.

Now, I’m not demonizing referrals. They’re great. But if they’re your SOLE source of leads, that’s a problem.

Because as you’ve probably realized, referral roulette is just that—roulette.

Sometimes you get lucky and land on a dream client. But most of the time? You almost hit, but not quite. Instead, you hit clients who don’t fit just right. And you pay for it dearly.

Clients who scope creep, clients who don’t have a budget over $1.5k, clients who want custom projects that take you a gazillion times longer to complete, clients who send 3 follow-up emails in 24 hours, clients you take on solely because rent is due—ignoring the amount they’ll cost you in inevitable therapy bills.

So if cold traffic hits your homepage and peaces out, your website isn’t underperforming. It’s not doing its job at all.

And yup—that means it’s time to hire a website copywriter.

That brings you to the final sign… *drum roll, please*

Sign No. 5: You can comfortably invest 4+ figures in your website copy

How much does it cost to get a website with great copy? The answer varies wildly, with many copywriters charging $10k+ for website copy.

But if you’re in a Facebook group and some girl with no profile pic (or worse, an AI-generated profile pic) tells you she can write a 6-page, SEO-optimized website for $899, you better run—not walk—RUN away from her.

Because that girl—if she doesn’t ghost you—is going to deliver the shittiest AI-written copy you’ve ever seen in your life. A pack of hamsters with a keyboard could do a better job. Trust.

You should expect to pay at least $4-5k for full website copy (aka up to 6 pages of SEO-optimized website copy). Or if you aren’t ready for the whole overhaul yet, you can also get the 3 most important website pages written for half that. 😉

But let’s go back to the word “comfortably,” because it’s doing a helluva lot of work in this sentence. And it’s there on purpose.

Investing in a freelance web copywriter isn’t a “I could scrape the money together if I skip little Timmy’s softball lessons” decision. It’s a business investment you’re making from a place of sound strategy.

A website copywriting investment is NOT the move to make if you’re hoping it single-handedly saves a business that’s going down like the Titanic.

It’s the move you make when you’re ready to fill your calendar with more dream projects, take back your weekends (and date nights), and spend more time in your biz doing what you love instead of wasting time in the land of Mis-fit Leads.

There you have it—the 5 most important signs you’re ready to hire a website copywriter for your online business.

And if you shook your head “no” to any of the Qs above, then it’s not the right time yet. And you know what? That’s perfectly fine. You’ll get there.
